St. Albans City(0) 0
Enfield (0) 1 Hammatt 89

A stunning late goal from Hammatt got Enfield off to a flyer in 2001 as they won 1-0 at St Albans City on New Year's Day.

Four minutes of injury time had passed when Hammatt started to run at a tired home defence. Ronnie Watson made a diagonal run off the ball, allowing Hammatt the space to burst into the box and slam his shot into the top corner from a tight angle. Enfield's joy was marred by a horrific injury to Steve Magone who fractured his cheekbone in a clash of heads. He was stretchered, unconscious, off the pitch and taken to hospital by ambulance. The full back will be out of action for at least three weeks. E's manager Tom Loizou said: 'we will not get carried away with this, but I think the result and the performance proves that I am not here to get the club relegated. I was pleased with the commitment of the players and our defending was exeptional. We have only had a few sessions but the back line worked extremely well as a unit.'

The visitors had slightly the better of the first half, with Jason Geraghty and debutant Mike Rodosthenous showing some excellent touches in midfield. There were few clear scoring opportunities, Wayne Brown coming closest with a header which was hooked away from the goalmouth . Lee Allen and Jay Deveraux both tested Saints stopper Richard Hurst while Watson and Hammatt both missed the target while well placed. The home side gained the initiative in the second half and had a golden chance to break the deadlock when Spencer Knight crossed to the unmarked Gary Ansell who volleyed over from eight yards.

Magona's injury came on 70 minutes and a draw looked the likely result as the E's stood firm against St Albans pressure. Jerome John saved well from Corey Campbell's 20 yard shot, clutching the ball at the second attempt. Then Hammatt grabbed the winner out of the blue and Enfield survived as the referee allowed some 12 minutes of added time.

Enfield (0) 0
Gravesend & Northfleet (1) 1 Stadhart 8

Tom Loizou's brave new world stumbled, then spluttered to a complete halt against Gravesend & Northfleet. That said, referee Mr Rubery had a stinker of a game as he failed to discipline some particularly nasty tackles by the visitors. Watson for Enfield was kicked silly by the opposition goalie, so why were no cards shown for that? Right from the start Enfield were on the back pedal as Jackson carved a hole through the defence only to be denied by Jerome John. Moments later they were not so lucky, with Stadhart having the relatively easy task of scoring unchallenged past the keeper. Lakin for Enfield (it's a new player every week these days) hoofed well over the bar when it seemed easier to score; Rodosthenous shot tamely when faced with an open goal after Jamie Turner went awol from his goal.

Rodosthenous - or rather the player's name - had earlier provided the biggest laugh of the day. As the tannoy announcer ran through the side his eyes must have been on the name at no8, for he took a deep breath, adjusted his false teeth and in a complete cop out said something approaching 'Rods'. A better stab at it next week perhaps?

A slightly better second half once Flemming was introduced to the match on the hour. Within two minutes he had Gravesend's defence in a flap as he managed to retain his feet before crossing, with the ensuing scramble coming to the end at the hands of a Gravesend defender pushing the ball over the bar. 'no' said the referee, 'yes' said all of us. It was about this stage that Jerome John showed Mr Rubery's lack of fitness, as the keeper wound up for a long kick down the park after an attack broke down. So John kicks it upfield, the ball is headed on and a shot does wide. And where was Rubery? He was still puffing up to the centre circle.

(F A Trophy 2nd Round) 8th January 2001

Maidenhead United (1) 1
Enfield (0) 0

Match report by 'The Faithful' For those that didn't go, and there weren't many there, it was indeed a grim affair. The team was John, McDonald, Deveraux, Geraghty (Capone), Brown, Gant, Watson (Alleyne), Rattray, Flemming, Hammatt and Allen (Moody). Apologies if I've spelt any wrong. We started off pretty well in the first ten minutes or so but Maidenhead soon started to carve out chances and when they took the lead after about 20 minutes it was no surprise. Basically, a first-half Geraghty strike aside, the rest of the game was fairly mediocre with neither 'keeper having a shot to save. We had a bit of joy down the right in the second half but didn't trouble the Maidenhead goal to a great extent. The only real entertainment was the Maidenhead rush for the shower. It was fairly niggly throughout and boiled over with about 30 minutes to go when one of theirs semmed to headbutt Lee Allen after a tussle on the touchline for which he was dismissed. There were a series of 'robust' challenges after that and in the last few minutes Hammatt got involved with one of their players as a cross came in and after a spot of handbags Hammatt received a swift punt and the second Maidenhead man received his marching orders. It is believed that Ratrray was also sent off just after the game for dissent after being booked earlier on. All in all a poor performance and a poor game. Man-of-the-Match? Marvin Harriott (unused sub). See you all on Saturday then!

Enfield (0) 1 Flemming 73
Dulwich Hamlet (0) 1 57

First half Enfield started like they meant business and promptly ran out of steam within ten minutes. The game was held up for a while after a shortage of match balls. 580kb flatball
Second half - two 99 flakes please Hamlet had the cheek to take the lead with their first effort on target. The points looked to be going the visitors way 711kb 0-1 down! until sub Flemming scored with a deflection that left Cleevely with no chance. Same as last week but a better result. Freezing cold day. The game had a surreal ending with the sound of an ice cream van heralding the final whistle.

Enfield (0) 1 Morris 56
Harrow Borough (1) 2 Hurlock (pen) 27; Richardson 56

Despite being below their hosts in the league table, Harrow looked the likely victors from the start as the E's struggled to find any cohesion in their play. John Hurlock opened the scoring for the visitors on 27 minutes from the penalty spot. Harrow held their lead into the second half, but on 56 minutes they handed Enfield the chance to level the match when Brian Hammatt was sent tumbling in the area. Danny Jones didn't hit the penalty cleanly and it was parried away. But from the resultant corner visiting defender Lyons, trying to head clear, succeeded only in lobbing his own goalkeeper, allowing Jamie Morris to head home on the goal line. But Enfield fell behind again on 68 minutes when Harrow's Richardson powered a header past Jerome John. E's boss Tom Loizou threw on Allen and Fleming in an attempt to rescue a point from the game but their efforts were in vain.
