Enfield fixtures and match reports for 2000/2001 August-October 2000[Aug-Oct] [Nov] [Dec] [Jan] [Feb] [Mar] [Apr] [May](Ryman League Premier Division) 19th August 2000 Enfield 3 Bunn; Morgan; Alleyne No match report (Ryman League Premier Division) 21st August 2000 Croydon 2 Jason Geraghty scored the opener midway through the first half against the run of play. They equalised from a free kick shortly before half-time. After about 10 minutes of the second half, Croydon went ahead after John Morgan got caught in possession. He then made matters worse by getting sent off along with one of their defenders for a wrestling match. We got out of jail in injury time when one of the Croydon defenders put through his own net from a Jay Devereaux cross. Croydon were very physical and played a direct game with an off-side trap - not very pretty. Our lads battled hard, but were overrun in midfield and showed little creativity. Bunn and Hammit did their best, but I don't think they'll trouble many defences. I reckon its going to be a long old season! Nicky Haydon was stupidly booked afterwards for something said to the referee. Swifts took charge of the early stages with Mark Kane back in the centre of midfield. Ian Wiles headed just wide from a Chris Payne corner, with Payne involved in most of the better Heybridge creative moments. On the break, Enfield looked sharp and Dave Fleming netted sweetly for them in the ninth minute. A Terry Warwick long range effort was just over for Heybridge, and Chris Lee rattled the Enfield crossbar from Haydon's floated free kick with the keeper floundering. Enfield gradually worked their way into the game without seriously threatening Banks and, for Heybridge, Lee smacked a volley just high. Heybridge notched a deserved equaliser in the 52nd minute as John Pollard headed past a static Enfield goalkeeper. Heybridge began to spread play well and Haydon and Payne were combining to good effect, with Payne putting some searching crosses into the Enfield penalty area. The game became very scrappy, with too many stoppages, and in the end both sides were happy to settle for a point. In a game where the blowy and rainy conditions got rapidly worse, Enfield proceeded to spurn at least six clear cut chances of victory before the last desperate finale. For instance, Rattray, Allen and Harvey should reasonably have put Enfield 3-0 ahead in the opening half an hour to kill off the contest. Harrow's David Hook looked at times uncertain in his handling, between a series of important saves to keep his side in the game. Best chance being Flemming's cross to Rattray, whose well directed shot cannoned off the keepers legs. As the first half came to a close, Harrow got in their first real test of the Enfield defence. The rain picked up ever stronger during the interval. Morgan, subject of transfer speculation all this week, came in for some special attention from Lyons to the effect that after one particularly messy tackle sent Morgan sprawling, Lyons threw himself to the ground and in turn rolled over a few times for effect. Very funny! Bunn tested Hook from long range and Jerome John was shortly to need some treatment after a collision. Inevitably, after all the pressure, Harrow were to score with their second chance of the game. Things got just a little dramatic after this, with Mark Cooper getting his marching orders for pulling at Brown who might have scored. Two yellows were also Hurlock's undoing, and now it was a two man advantage to Enfield. However, Flemming then saw red for a very strange six minute triple. Just when it seemed Enfield were on the way out of the cup, Bunn got a hold of a loose ball, and from distance leveled the scores in the last minute. You want more? OK, so just as we were recovering from all this and making plans for a home game at Boreham Wood, the hosts scored from their third chance of the match and held out for the final five minutes. The unfortunate scenes with the referee and the *Enfield* supporters after the game near the tunnel can be explained away as idiots who only see the FA Cup ties and are then absent for the rest of the season. |
Match reports for these months were thin on the ground while I was away in the USA. What little information gleaned came from opponents websites and tidbits posted on the Bravenet forum. 2000/2001 Season The statistical content for the 2000/2001 season is owned by Jim Cunneen. You may not copy or distribute documents, pages or content without the express written consent of Jim Cunneen as the applicable copyright owner. 2000/01 StatsCareer |
