Enfield fixtures and match reports for 1998/1999 May 1999[Friendlies] [Aug] [Sep] [Oct] [Nov] [Dec] [Jan] [Feb] [Mar] [Apr](Ryman Premier League) 1st May 1999 Aldershot Town (0) 3 Abbott 48, 67; McGrath 53 Classic game of two halves - and before you start to get witty I realise that ALL games have two halves... I meant the fact that... aw, forget it. Aldershot Town were always going to be pumped up after that mauling handed out earlier in the season, whilst off the field activities have left end of season games as little more than a sideline to the battles with Enfield Council and Chairman. Having said that, it wouldn't do any harm at all to have done a number on Town again. For a while it did seem as though Enfield were going to wrap up the points after an early strike by Bentley following some good work with Darlington from a throw. Dunwell had just failed to score on a breakaway just moments earlier and the side had taken care of Aldershot's East Bank who were treating us all to some of their quaint songs that probably harked back to the Football League. For instance, wasn't the 'Celery' song consigned to the bin after going out of fashion in the early eighties? At this point I was remarking to the bloke next to me that our recent addition, Jason White in goal, would see us through. Straight from the kick off I was proved hopelessly wrong as Abbott found time and space to score with ease. Within minutes White was picking the ball out of the net again. This time from the head of McGrath. An element of debate in this one from our end of the ground, but when Eddie Green is the man in the middle what chance would an Enfield fan expect? Green was making his last appearance beforing retiring from the middle and so decided to go out in style. What cannot be in doubt was the complete balls up for a third Town goal - and by then Aldershot Town were running the game. Did White get a push from Abbott in the mix up? Yes, was the opinion from 100yds away! White went on to make three excellent saves at full length whilst our very own John Morgan was testing the Town's "England No1" Gary Phillips, who has proved that there is indeed life after Barnet. After the whistle the players came over to throw their shirts to the crowd. Always a nice touch, but what about those who sponsored these players for kits? |
