Dave Jones - a sad farewell to Mr. Enfield F.C.

The death of Enfield FC stalwart Dave Jones at the age of 73 severed a link embracing 52 years with the football club. And for many with long associations with the club, his death marks the end of an era. Mr. Jones moved from Islington to Enfield when he was 13 years old and in the same year stamped his authority on the local football scene by scoring the winning goal against his old team in a local cup final

He made his senior debut for Enfield in 1946 against Redhill and played his last game for the club six years later in an Athenian League fixture at Barnet. In all he made 68 appearances for Enfield, scoring an impressive 34 goals along the way.

The 1947/48 season proved to be one of the highlights of his playing career, when he won a Middlesex Senior Cup medal in the following side: Bill Freeman; Alf Rosser; Harry Rawlings; Billy Heal; Arthur Warren; Ernie Bocock; Sid Gleave; Jack Chappell; Dave Jones; Joe Beckett and Len West.

Dave Jones was appointed Enfield's trainer in the 1970/71 season and, apart from one season at Bishop's Stortford, was connected with the club until recently.

He died at his home in Ponders End after a long battle against cancer.

A fitting tribute was paid by former Enfield manager Eddie McCluskey at his funeral service, which was well attended by many ex-Enfield managers and players. A minute's silence was held before the recent Enfield vs. Aylesbury match at Southbury Road.
